My bed is my most special, treasured space in my home. Maybe my favorite place in the whole world. And I have spent so much time and money over the last decade+ switching all of our bedding to more eco friendly AND non-toxic (I hate this terminology but it's all I've got) options. Sometimes polyester and other synthetic materials can's be avoided, but considering how much time we spend in bed, I go out of my way to prioritize natural fibers like wool, organic cotton, etc. I've tried so many brands over the years and here is my full satisfaction, highly recommended list of the best options:
Mattresses:
This is obviously the biggest investment of all. I've slowly transitioned the beds in our home to organic/natural fiber mattresses. There is kind of no way around it - they are expensive. I put $100 a month away in our budget to save up for our first one and was ready to purchase in less than a year. We spend so much time in bed and expect to have these mattresses for many years, so felt really comfortable making them a financial priority. Below are the actual brands we own and are happy with:
Happsy Organic Mattress:Â I searched high and low and think this is the best price for the quality. I have purchased both a king and queen size and am so happy with them. I've had them for 3 years and haven't experienced any change in comfort or firmness.
Avocado Mattresses are pretty popular - we have one twin sized mattress and it's really comfortable, but I have heard from a friend with a queen size that they don't age well.
Mattress Pad:
Naturepedic has the only truly waterproof, non toxic mattress protector out there (according to me after trying other cheaper alternatives that did nothing). With kids and expensive mattresses, every single bed we have has one of these on it. My king bed actually has two layers including two mattress protectors (read about why this started here). We have washed them countless times and they definitely have had spills and accidents without ANY leaking.
Pillows:
Finding the right pillow has been a long and painful journey. I am ready to announce that I have finally found the perfect options. PuredownPro has two of the most affordable for natural fibers pillows available. I have these in the gusseted style, which hold their shape well and are squishy enough to be comfortable on my back and side. I recommend the queen size to fit a standard pillowcase nicely.
And I have these, which hold their shape, look so good on the bed, and are soft and cozy like a traditional down pillow but not in a flat / too squishy way. I love them so much and the price is so good for the materials and quality - plus the company offers free shipping and free 30 day trial. 10/10 recommend after searching for YEARS and being constantly disappointed.
Comforter:
PuredownPro again. I'm a hot sleeper (and live in New Orleans where it's very rarely super cold out) and am not usually a down comforter gal, but you cannot beat the look of a fluffy down comforter. I hate getting the duvet cover on and have used a thin cotton quilt for years, but I recently decided to go back to comforter life because I just love the look and coziness factor so much. This is the BEST price and materials (natural fiber - 95% feather fiber and 5% goose down & organic cotton outer) option I could find and like the pillows above, it's exceeded my expectations. It's lightweight but has the look I want, and while I can get a bit warm at night, I'm able to sleep comfortably even with the down fill.
Duvet Cover & Shams:
The Company Store: I haven't tested as many of these out over the years - but I like a classic organic cotton percale duvet cover and shams in white look. Crisp, clean, hotel style. There is nothing better. I went with this option because they were having a big sale.
Silk Pillowcases:
It brings me immense joy to sleep on the luxury that is a silk pillowcase. Once I started, it's quite hard to go back. I am currently using this one from The Company Store because, again, big sale and I was already ordering from them, but I have also used the slightly cheaper option from Quince for many years.
Sheets:
Honestly, there are so many organic 100% cotton sheet options on the market nowadays that I really search based on price/sale/availability most of the time. Because I bought the silk pillowcases and am using the duvet cover in place of a top sheet, I really only needed 1 fitted sheet. It's a bit harder to find sheet separates, so I ended up ordering from Pact when they had a sale going on.
