You've probably come across the post- birth guidance that says:
5 days in the bed 5 days on the bed 5 days near the bed
I love this, follow this myself, and recommend to my clients. And also, this means your bed needs to be very hardworking.
Postpartum hormones, healing, and life with kids means your bed is hit with:
extreme night (and day) sweats
blood & other bodily fluids
snacks and spills in bed
baby poop
baby spit up
diaper leaks
etc
So! Around 37 weeks, I recommend setting up your bed to be ready for the occasion so that someone can wash your bedding without having to leave your bed too long. This might be excessive to some (the mattress protectors aren't cheap) but I am happy to say no to approximately 1000 baby things in favor of my own ease and comfort.
This way, when things get funky, or when there are inevitable stains or spills, someone (hopefully NOT you) just strips the top layer of sheets and mattress protector and you hop right back in bed. Get the top layers washed as soon as possible and either put right back on the top layer or strip and replace if that needs a wash too.
Unfortunately, there's still laundry involved, but at least you can stay in bed without risking the mattress's wellbring
If you're planning a home birth, there are a few more elements to add once labor begins:
This is my holy grail mattress protector (non-toxic AND actually completely waterproof - I own 5). I have other "clean" bedding recommendations in this post. I am very passionate about the coziness and comfort of my bed.
